Kate, founder of It’s Our Planet Too, has always loved the natural world. With a degree in Environmental Science and the fresh perspective that came with becoming a parent, she dreamed of inspiring the next generation of eco heroes. What began as a simple idea during her daily commute grew into a thriving independent business, bringing hands-on, plastic-free activity kits to children’s homes.
Her Tool Kits For Eco Heroes are packed with arts and crafts, messy play, science experiments, nature spotting activities, and fascinating planet facts – all designed to spark curiosity and action. Everything can be done using items from the home, garden, or recycling box, making them playful, easy, and entirely plastic-free. As one customer put it, they’re like “Blue Peter in a box”!
Autumn is the perfect season to dive in: from spotting colourful leaves to crafting with natural materials, Kate’s kits encourage little explorers to step outside, get messy, and discover the magic all around them – turning crisp days into joyful planet-positive adventures.
We sat down with Kate and picked her brain on the best ways to get kid's outdoors this autumn.
We love your commitment to the planet and to getting kids to fall in love with the natural world. With the arrival of autumn, can you give us some inspiration for fun outdoor activities for kids?
Believe it or not, autumn is a wonderful time to enjoy eco friendly activities with your family, have fun together and foster a love for nature. What’s more many of these activities are completely free, so there’s really no excuse! Here are a few ideas easy eco ideas for an autumn adventure together…
1. Go on a nature scavenger hunt: Collect leaves, acorns and pinecones for eco-crafts
2. Go on a woodland adventure: Go tree climbing, build a den, take a bark rubbing or fly seed helicopters.
3. Build a home for hedgehogs: Find a sturdy box, cut a doorway and leave it in a sheltered spot.
4. Carve a pumpkin: Visit a pumpkin patch, carve your funny face and cook with the pulp.
5. Make some bird food: Use pinecones and peanut butter to make easy bird feeders.
6. Go apple picking: Find a local orchard and bake with your harvest.
Finally, which of your products do you recommend for getting kids outside this autumn?
We have 22 themed kits and they all have an element of outdoor play or a nature spotting activity, but for autumn I would definitely recommend either our INCREDIBLE INSECTS or TREMENDOUS TREES kits. Insects is lovely and grubby, with lots of opportunities to hunt for mini beasts and even go foraging for mushrooms to turn into paint! Our trees kit is very nature based and includes a lovely recipe to make muffins, using as many ingredients from trees as possible. There’s also fun activities to learn how to measure trees, as well as making a papier mâché globe!
Thank you for sitting down with us today Kate. We think It's Our Planet Too Tool Kits are a great way to get your little explorers outdoors. Check out the collection here.
